I used to joke with my mom that she would watch anything that moved on TV unless it was on PBS. But that’s my favorite network. My first real addiction came during “Upstairs, Downstairs.” The four-season series was the most popular Masterpiece Theater program ever, and it had lots of competition. It told of a wealthy family and the servant staff living downstairs. The intertwining of their lives created the intrigue as each episode ended with a new relationship between the two groups beginning. The host at that time was Alistair Cooke. Sesame Street (one of the educational children’s shows, if there’s anyone left who doesn’t know that) had a segment in which Cookie Monster played “Alistair Cookie,” hosting a show called “Upstairs, Downstairs.” The show consisted of Grover going up the stairs, then down the stairs. Doubt many children thought it was as funny as I did.

In research carried out by the Council of Mortgage Lenders (CML), the number of first-time buyers getting on the property ladder was revealed to have fallen.

Over the course of June, some 35,600 loans were issued to those looking to make their initial steps into the housing market - down from the 39,800 recorded in the same month last year. Although the most recent CML figures indicated a rise from the 34,600 noted during May, the June statistics were the lowest recorded for the month since 2004. Meanwhile, the amount of loans issued to existing homeowners decreased to 66,300 - a shortfall of about 4,000 from the corresponding month in 2006.

OVARTACI (1894-1981) hasn’t obtained the fame he deserved. Somehow he hasn’t been able to make it internationally even though he was a renowned artist in his homeland of Denmark. I think the reason is that he wasn’t only a brilliant and very unique artist, but also a psychiatric patient, committed to the Asylum of Risskov for many, many years. He takes some rethinking to assess and unfortunately almost nothing has been written about him except in Danish.
